Three different professions in The Netherlands that deal with the skin

In The Netherlands you have three professions that deal with the skin:

  • Estheticians do treatments such as skin exfoliation, massage, aromatherapy, and facials. They also analyze skin to identify any health problems and temporarily remove hair. Some estheticians have a cosmetic focus and may apply makeup and consult individuals on the best products for their skin type. Estheticians can be found working in beauty salons, resorts, fitness clubs, and spas.

  • A Skin/Dermal Therapist is a paramedics and treats the damaged skin. Working alongside doctors specializing in Cosmetic Surgical and non-surgical treatments, they have advanced training in laser, IPL, skin peels, photo rejuvenation, cosmetic tattooing and micro needling. They are also specialized in treatments for scars, wounds, lipedema and lymphedema. Skin/Dermal Therapists can be found working in a clinic, healthcare institution or hospital.

  • A Dermatologist is a medical doctor who diagnose, treat and advise patients on achieving healthy and attractive skin. During patient visits, dermatologists take medical histories and use a dermoscope, or magnifying or illuminated device, to detect abnormalities or malignancies. They might use diagnostic techniques, such as biopsies, to identify diseases and determine appropriate therapies. Dermatologists can be found working in a clinic, healthcare institution or hospital.
